Strategies
- Reduce verbal input
- Use simple, literal language [no sarcasm or irony]
- Increase visual support [visual schedules, diagrams, pictures, symbols]
- Give the child/young person time to process questions and instructions
- Teach listening skills explicitly
- Ensure the child/young person works with more able communicators in pairs and groups
- Teach vocabulary that is helpful for their social or learning skills or key to accessing the topic.
